Somebody's Got a Case of the Mondays

Participants/Time of Day: Doug, Griffin / 5:00am .... Mary / 7:00pm (same workout)

Workout: 50 Burpees, 3 mile run, 50 Burpees

Thoughts: Don't want to go to work today...

Weekend in the Hill Country

Participants/Time of Day(s):
SATURDAY:
Mary, Griffin / 8:00am
Doug / 9:00am-6:00pm
SUNDAY:
Mary, Griffin / 8:00am

Workout:
SATURDAY:
Mary - Running, Lunging, Sprinting, Abs with her Mom
Doug - Running a chain saw ALL DAY
SUNDAY:
Mary - Running, Lunging, Sprinting, Abs with her Mom

Thoughts: We had a short but fun weekend, the weather was great. I am more sore from the work I did on Saturday than I have been from any workout in a long time. Mary had a great time hanging out with her mom and sister.

Not a Great Week in Fitness Terms

Week: 2

Workout: 3

Day/Date: Saturday, 2/26

What We Did: Mom and I went on a nice brisk walk Sarturday evening. We added a little onto her usual route, so I'm estimating 3.5 miles.

Thoughts: I had intentions of getting in a good bike ride but started working out in the garage and just never got to it. The wind is blowing like a hurricane out there today, so i probably won't do it today either. Maybe I'll go to the gym during the academy awards. It shouldn't be crowded then!

Eff-ing COLD!

Participants/Time of Day: Doug, Griffin / 5:00am

Workout:
1 mile run to park
50 Burpees
50 Pull-Ups
100 Sit Ups
1 mile run home

Thoughts: First off, I have a serious head cold going on right now (sinus headaches, congestion, mucus, the whole nine yards) and my workouts have suffered because of it. Secondly, it was coooold when I went out this morning. I guess the past few mornings of 65-70 degrees has spoiled me.

Doug & Mary

Participants/Time of Day: Doug & Griffin / 5:00am , Mary / 7:00pm

Workout:
Doug: 5 Mile Run, 100 Sit Ups, 50 Push Ups

Mary: 15 min stair climb, 15 min treadmill, 500m row

Thoughts: Good workout today after a day off yesterday.

New Workout Approach...

Week: 2

Workout: 2

Day/Date: Thursday, 2/24

What I did: Bike/Swim/Bike
- 4.75 mile warm-up ride to the gym
- 500m swim
- 8.75 mile ride back home

Thoughts: This was a new approach and is something that I'd like to try to do once a week. I just threw my things in a backpack and took off to the gym on the bike. I need to get a new pair of Tri Shorts and I won't even have to change when I get there. This was the first time I had swam in almost a year. 500m was all that my shoulders wanted, but I can tell that it was good for them. Then back on the bike for a little longer ride to finish off the workout. The wind was brutal this afternoon, which made the ride a challenge. No speed records today for sure.

Since I slacked off Monday & Wednesday, I've got to get something in every day for the rest of the week. Anyone interested in a bike ride in the neighborhood sometime this weekend?

Snuck one in

Week: 2

Workout: 2

Date: 2/24

What I did: Weights...

Chest - 3 exercises, 9 sets
Back - 3 exercises, 9 sets

Thoughts: So I decided to lift with my JV soccer team for the first time ever today. If you are relatively weak (like me) and want to feel really strong for an hour, lift with a bunch of 14 - 16 year-old JV soccer players. Anyway, it was a great workout. Feeling stronger every day. So glad half-marathon training is over. I haven't enjoyed working like this in 6 or 7 months.

Family Time

Participants: Melissa, Greg, & Ben

Last night we decided to spend some quality family time together, so instead of trying to squeeze in an intense workout we went on an 45 minute family walk and took Ben to swing at the park. It was really. This challenge is about getting out and moving and enjoying fitness, and we really enjoyed our activity for the day.

It's week two, and the posting have slowed down for the week a little. Let's try to get back up to our momentum of last week. I know the weather is supposed to be crappy today and tomorrow, but let's all really try to push hard and get in our 5 for the week!!!

Love you all.

Here we go again

Week: 2

Workout: 1

Date: 2/22

What I did: Weights...

Biceps - 3 exercises, 9 sets
Triceps - 3 exercises, 9 sets
Shoulders - 3 exercises, 9 sets
Traps - 1 exercise, 3 sets

Thoughts: Glad to have week 2 underway. Had a great workout between school and our 2 games last night. Really tried to add weight and lift heavy. Felt good for a newly minted 36 year old.

Week 2 - Workout 1

Week: 2

Workout: 1

What I did:
- 10 min medium intensity warmup on the elliptical
- 4 sets of the following circuit -
15 lat pulldowns
15 shoulder press
15 seated row
15 chest press
25 back extensions
30 sit-ups
- 10 mins on elliptical at medium/high intensity

Thoughts: Decent workout. It would be better if people wouldn't camp out on my machines!

Xtreme Crossfit (2-2)

Week: 2
Workout: 2

What I did:
Warm Up 5 min
(4 rounds)
400 m run
15 box jumps (did these on a weight bench...no box jumps at Just Fitness) :(
15 DB Thrusters (10 lbs)
And 4x25 Crunches
Thoughts:
This was a fun workout. Next time I will probably up my weight on the squats to really push myself to the max. But I was a little hesitant with it being my first time, and didn't want to crap out. I really enjoyed bopping around the gym. Thanks for the fun workouts, Dougie. Feel free to send me some more.

Take 2

Participants/Time of Day: Mary, Doug / 5:15am

Workout:

Quick Stretch/Warm-Up
4 Rounds:
400m Run
15 Box Jumps (d-30" m-20")
15 Thrusters (d-40# m-22.5#)

Thoughts: We were late to the gym so we had to hustle but it was a great workout.

Monday, February 21, 2011

Mary Monday

Participants/Time of Day: Mary / 7:00pm

Workout:
2 mile run. Then
10 Rounds:
10 Lunges
10 Squats
10 Sit Ups

Thoughts: I had to do something when I got home from work!

Too much wine last night (2-1)

Week: 2
Workout: 1
What I did:
40 min on the elliptical (cue wop wop sound)
Thoughts:
I woke up at 5am and DID NOT want to workout. I put on my clothes (which I laid out the night before) and I got in the car. About halfway there, I u-turned and was going to go get back in bad. As I was driving back towards the house, I thought "I really don't want to do this, but I know I will feel guilty all day if I don't do anything." So I compromised with myself that all I had to do was go get on a machine and just relax and hydrate. Then I u-turned again and headed back towards the gym. After my "intense" elliptical session I felt much better (and i did sneak in a few strenuous intervals). Today I am going to flush this wine out of my system with lots of water, and tomorrow I am going to try a Crossfit workout. Hopefully having something new to try will help me spring out of bed with a little more enthusiasm.

Week 1 Tally!

Good job everyone on WEEK 1. I think everyone did amazing (especially considering the short notice on this challenge). Thanks for diligently posting your workouts on the blog. Please keep it up. I don't know about you guys, but it is really encouraging to me to know that I have you all to be "accountable" to. When I think about slacking off, I always think "Would this be something I'd be proud to blog about." If it isn't, I push myself a little harder.

Today is Day 1 of WEEK 2. I hope everybody is excited to get their workouts in this week and is noticing the difference that consistency and frequency make when you are trying to re-energize your commitment to a healthy lifestyle. It makes me so happy that our family can share our goals and journeys. Love you all!!

One for the thumb.

Week: 1

Workout: 5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Date: 2/20

What I did: Played in my first "real" soccer game in a couple years. 90 minutes of stop and start cardio with some random "gymnastics" interspersed.

Thoughts: I did it. I started late and slow this week, but managed to get to 5 workouts! The game was much fun. Not the best performance of my career, but not too bad for an aging veteran. We won, too, which is always nice. I gotta tell ya, I'm more sore today than I have been since the day after the 2009 White Rock Marathon. Ouch.

4 down, 1 to go!

Week: 1

Workout: 4

Date: 2/19

What I did: Weights...

Chest - 4 exercises (12 total sets)
Back - 4 exercises (12 total sets)

Thoughts: It was great to get a chance to lift with my bride again. We really like the JustFitness we joined. And they have childcare! Great start to a fun weekend.

Saturday (1-5)

Week: 1
Workout: 5 (yay!!!)
Date: 2/19/11
What I did:
Chest, Back, & Abs with Greg
Thoughts:
I love working out with my husband!!

Prezidentz Day

Participants/Time of Day: Doug, Griffin / 4:50am

Workout: 4.5 Mile Run

Thoughts: Early start this morning, I really need to get to work. The run felt great though. Mary was "sweepy" so she stayed in bed.

Sunday, February 20, 2011

Oops I Did It Again

Who: Pam

When: Sunday, Feb 20

What: Same route as yesterday

I figured that this week's slow/late start wasn't going to add up to much, so I decided on a reprisal of Saturday. Optimistic about a stronger showing next week.

Sunday Funday

Participants/Time of Day: Mary, Doug / 11:00am

Workout:
Stretch/Plyo Warm-Up

4 Rounds:
10 Box Jumps (30" Box)
15 Knees to Elbows
10 Clapping Push-Ups
15 Sit-Ups
THEN
1000m Row

Thoughts: This was one of the workouts from the CrossFit competition that Charlie did this weekend - it was a good one. Mary opted to do an intense session on the spin bike while I did this.

Saturday, February 19, 2011

Saturday Workout With Griffin!!!

Participants/Time of Day: Mary & Griffin/10:00am

Griffin and I went to White Rock this morning and ran 6 miles! After our run I stretched and did 50 lunges. Griffin got to go swimming in the lake and made a new friend named Harvey. I think it is safe to say I am his new favorite!

Late to the Party

OK, this is the very first post from dear old Mom, representing also my very first workout of this year, and the Aggie Family 5x5 Challenge. Better late than never, right?

Three-ish mile brisk walk around my usual loop in Castle Hills. Felt fine but pretty unchallenging. However, I resisted the urge to do anything more strenuous in a fruitless effort to keep up with you people. Enough effort for the first time out... we'll see about tomorrow.

p.s. Greg, did it really take some time to figure out how to post? Seriously?

Long Day Ahead of Me

Participants/Time of Day: Doug / 5:30am

Workout:
Row/Stretch/Plyo Warm-Up

7 Rounds:
15 KB Swings (55#)
15 Power Clean (95#)
15 Box Jumps (24" Box)

Thoughts: The workout was my hardest workout of the week - super intense. I am driving to Houston and back today with Austin and Garrett for a friend's brother's funeral. Keep my buddy Robert Lawson and his family in your prayers.

Friday, February 18, 2011

I'll let the family be the judge....

Week: 1
Workout: 4 (maybe?)
Date: 2/18

What I did: 3x25 sit-ups, 3x15 push-ups, 4x 30-second planks, 3x25 walking lunges

Thoughts: Didn't feel like driving to the gym. I just did this at home. Good enough? I'll let everyone else decide. I AM sweating like a pig, if that makes any difference.

Good start to a Long(view) day

Week: 1

Workout: 3

Date: 2/18

What I did: Weights...

Biceps - 2 exercises (6 total sets)
Triceps - 2 exercises (6 total sets)
Shoulders - 2 exercises (6 total sets)
Shrugs - 3 sets

Thoughts: Got in a nice little workout this morning during first period. The boys were in the classroom being supervised by one of my assistant coaches. We're traveling to Longview today for a couple district games, so there was no practice this morning. Gonna get home tonight at 1:30am or so. Glad I got a workout in.

Morning Run (1-4)

Week: 1
Workout:4
Date: 2/18/11
What I did:
Got up at 5:00 am, and ran 3 miles.
Thoughts:
This run felt amazing. The weather was perfect, albeit a little muggy. Only one more workout and I will meet my goal for the week!!

It's Always Better at the Lake

Week: 1
Workout: 3
Date: 2/17
What I did: 24.5 mile ride around Eustace/Log Cabin/Payne Springs in 1:22 for a 17.8 mph avg.
Thoughts: I decided not to do anything yesterday and rest my legs. I could really tell the difference today. Even into a 15 mph wind I was able to sustain a much better pace. I plan to hit the gym tomorrow for some upper body/abs and let my legs rest for the Hill-Hopper ride on Sunday. That will be my 5 workouts this week!

Microchip

Participants/Time of Day: Mary, Doug / 5:00am

Workout:
500m Row Warm-Up

5 Rounds (increase weight every round):
5 DB Deadlift
5 DB Hang Clean
5 DB Push Press
5 DB Squats

- Catch a blow -

50-40-30-20-10 Reps:
Double-Unders
Sit-Ups

Thoughts: First intense weight workout of the week - felt great. For the first workout our weights were Doug -50,55,60,65,70 and Mary - 15,17.5,20,20,20. On the second workout I did double-unders with the jump rope and Mary did low box jumps because we only had one rope.

2 Down...

Week: 1

Workout: 2

Date: 2/17

What I did: Weights...

Chest - 3 exercises (9 total sets), Back - 3 exercises (9 total sets), Abs - 125 crunches

Thoughts: Got up early and worked out before school today. Good workout. Starting to feel stronger. So glad I'm not running as much anymore. Good luck, y'all.

Getting started here

Week: 1

Workout: 1

Date: 2/15

What I did: Weights; bis, tris, and shoulders

Thoughts: After school was over and after we took our soccer team yearbook pictures (and before our games last night), I got in a decent 45 minute session in the school's old weight room. Reasonable effort, even though I was a little pressed for time. I'm behind schedule already but looking forward to finishing the week strong. The hardest part of this workout was figuring out how to enter it on this stinkin' blog site thing. It took 2 minutes longer than my workout. Oh, well. Getting up to work out before school tomorrow. Wish me luck.

In the Air Tonight

Participants/Time: Doug, Mary, Griffin / 6:15pm

Workout: Run 1 mile to the park
10 Rounds:
5 Pull Ups
10 Push Ups
15 Squats
Run 1 mile back home
50 Sit Ups

Thoughts: Great workout at the end of the day. We slept in this morning because someone had one too many Bud Lights at happy hour last night. Classic.

Am I going to work out every day for the next 4 days? Yes.

Who/When? Lana/5:00AM

What? Ran 2 miles before school and did some crunches

Thoughts? I'm proud of myself for waking up. I set my alarm for 5:00 and when it went off I pressed snooze... twice. After the second snooze I nearly decided to turn my alarm off altogether and pray Dad would wake me up for school. Then I felt like a wimp. So I got up and ran (with a few obstacles such as losing my earbuds and tripping on my own feet down the stairs). Overall, I think I'm just happy it's over.

Melissa's Wednesday Workout

 Week: 1
Workout:3
Date: 2/16/11
What I did:
Got up at 4:55 am, and ran 2 miles at the gym, and did 17 min on the elliptical.
Thoughts:
I went to bed earlier last night, at 9:30 and this really helped my energy level this morning. I am slowly ooching my wake up time up. I'd like to be at the gym when it opens, so I can get in a full hour's workout. In hindsight, I probably could have stayed a few more minutes and dome some abs this morning, but I am still figuring out my schedule and how long things take me to accomplish between my workout and getting ready for work. Tomorrow I am looking forward to a nice day morning off!

In case anyone needs a laugh this morning, here's the best of Doug Monkhouse.

Following the Prescribed Format....

Week: 1

Workout: 2

Date: 2/15/11

What I did: Never made it to the gym so I went out for a ride at about 4pm. I did 19.6 miles (that rounds up to 20, right?) averaging 17.2 mph. Then I came in and did 3x15 sit-ups and 3x15 push-ups.

Thoughts: The push-ups and sit-ups were worse than the ride! Obviously I need to take a little tread off of this spare tire I've got. One thing I definitely need to do is decrease the portion size that I have for dinner. Sitting there talking to everyone, it's way too easy to get that second helping. Doug and mary aren't cooking tonight, so I have no excuse!

Bam

Participants/Time of Day: Doug, Griffin / 5:00am

Workout: 4.5 Mile Run / 50 Push Ups & 100 Sit Ups while Griff swam in the lake

Thoughts: Felt terrible during my run which is why I stopped and let Griffin swim while I rested and did some other stuff. I have not been drinking enough water lately and I ate like shizz over the weekend, I will attribute my weakness to that. Mary saved her energy for tomorrow.

Melissa is Dragging Butt (1-2 errr 1.5)

Week: 1
Workout:2
Date: 2/15/10
What I did:
Got up at 5 am, and did P0X Plyometrics.
Thoughts:
Getting up early was harder today than it was yesterday and my workout was awful. I hate to even say it, but I quit after 30 minutes. I did legs pretty hard yesterday so my legs just felt like lead. And I never got fully awake. Just an "off" day. Honestly, I am pretty dissatisfied with my performance, so I might try and sneak in a quick 20 min jog with Ben tonight just so I can feel good about what I did today and count this workout as one of my 5. We'll see...
Housekeeping:
1. Just to clarify, yesterday was Week 1, Day 1 of the challenge. Sunday 2/19 will the be the last day of the first Week 1 (Why? Because I said so). So everyone has until Sunday, to get in your remaining workouts.
2. Also, in my opinion if you do 6 workouts this week (or any week) you are still responsible for getting in 5 next week. You can't build credit, in other words. Let me know if you guys think that is a fair rule.
3. Also, try to log every single workout you do, not just your plan for the week. Even if your post is just one line. On Sunday evening, or Monday morning I will do a re-cap post and tally everybody's numbers.
4. I am also tracking nutrition in Daily Plate .  Its easy to set a calorie goal for the level of weight loss you want (if weight loss your goal). Almost every food I eat is already in the system and it gives you a good breakdown of macro-nutrients. If you haven't looked at this site before give it a glance. I love it and have used it for a few years now whenever I really want to focus on my nutrition.

IN THE FAAAAAAAAAACE!

We are very excited about starting the challenge and are more than happy to help anyone get motivated to get up and get moving on this thing! We are going to post our stuff together every day.

Participants/Time of Day
: Mary, Doug, Griffin / 4:30am

Workout: 3 Mile Run, 50 Sit Ups

Thoughts: Very low intensity "yog..." We took it easy on St. Valentine's Day but will get in some more challenging workouts later in the week.

Goals: See below

zk-z5316a2.jpg

Let the blogging begin!

I'm on a roll, albeit much overdue. Three days of exercise in a row. (and got the garage cleaned out as a bonus!) I just couldn't get going when it was below freezing and iced over, but the weekend was great. Saturday I went out by myself for a ride and did 30 miles. Then yesterday I had a fun ride with Mary. Doug came along too. ;-) Fun except for that wicked Windhaven Hill, that is. I think I got passed by a jogger going up that thing. We got in 23 miles. The wind was pretty brutal on the last leg home.

Today was another nice day. I went to the gym around lunch time. I got a 15 minute warm up on an elliptical machine, then did some upper body /shoulder machines, situps and back extensions. Then this evening I got out for a quick 10 mile ride. I tried to keep my pace pretty high but I think my legs are pretty wasted from the past couple of days. I averaged 16.9 mph for the ride.

My plan is to get in some gym time and riding time both for the next three days, then take a break from the riding on Friday & Saturday. I guess I'll plan on doing the 36 mile route for my ride on Sunday down around Shelby. I was hoping to be ready to do the 67 mile route, but I don't think I'm quite ready for that. The decision point comes at about mile 30, so we'll see how I feel.

Meliss's V-day Workout (1-1)

Week: 1
Workout: 1
Date: 2/14/11
What I did:
Got up at 5 am, went to the gym and did 35 min of legs and shoulders super sets and followed up with 10 min of abs.
Thoughts:
Getting up early was hard, but I'm glad I got it over with. I am going to try and set my alarm for 10 min earlier next time, so I can be at the gym right when it opens.
